Flax shive bedding for horses

The main disadvantage of straw compared to flax shive is that it may contain a lot of dust or fungal spores that cause allergies in some horses, leading to respiratory diseases. This, in turn, can affect the horse's performance due to oxygen deficiency. The first sign of such a problem is coughing.

The drawback of sawdust is that it is difficult to get rid of. It decomposes slowly and cannot be scattered on the ground. Wet sawdust is very heavy, especially compared to straw. In addition, there is a possibility of foreign objects such as small shards of glass, nails, or splinters getting into it. Sawdust may contain chemicals with which the trees were treated, and this can cause skin irritation or hoof diseases in some horses.

Unlike flax shive, which contains air, sawdust compresses quickly, so sawdust bedding is not as warm as flax bedding and is less comfortable to lie on. In addition, sawdust is mobile, so a horse can easily end up on the bare floor.
